Texting Teens & HP

So a while back a group of us went to go see the new Harry Potter movie. I found it enjoyable enough, especially the end fight which was very fulfilling effects wise. Unfortunately, the beginning hour or so of the movie was not a pleasant experience due to one specific event. About 15 minutes into the movie, some girls down in the first row of the theater began texting to their friends. Normally I wouldn’t find this too troublesome, but the combination that they were treating texting like IM, continued this practice for at least 20 minutes, and were doing it in the front row in a perfectly dark theater, it really started to frustrate me. I began debating if I should go talk to the courtesy desk, walk down and confront them, or just yell at them. Eventually I just yelled down “SHUT YOUR PHONE!” which was immediately proceeded by someone higher up in the theater yelling “Yea, shut your f***ing phone!!” (I decided not to curse at them as this was technically a kids movie). The girls quickly and embarrassingly closed their phones which was followed by applause from multiple audience members. I was very satisfied with myself. I’m hoping that texting in theaters doesn’t become more common since most people think when told to silence you cell phones that just means your ring tone, but they fail to realize that having a small bright light in a pitch black theater is just as annoying. Interestingly enough, for this particular movie, after the trailers, the movie started right up with no AMC intro or Cell Phone PSA, which maybe the girls were too stupid to realize that if they’re not told to do so they don’t need to.

On a plus note, I have now become addicted to seeing moives via a DLP projector. We first saw Pirates 3 via DLP, and now HP5. I can really notice a quality difference which adds tremendously to my enjoyment of paying 8 bucks to see a movie in a theater environment.

I have finished the last of the Harry Potter books as of last night. While I find the conclusion satisfying, there are a few things in this book and the series itself, that will prevent me from calling it Great. I won’t go into them in detail now, since there are still a lot of people left who still need to read the 7th book. I will just conclude with a quote from Tycho @ Penny-Arcade which pretty much expresses how I feel and have felt about the Harry Potter series.

I finished the last Harry Potter yesterday, but I couldn’t actually tell you what happened in it. It’s been like that for several books now, starting with The Order of the Phoenix, where I grip the book with hunger and aggression and consume it without ever tasting the meal. I have a sense of being satisfied, but it is murky, and distant, the way an anaconda must feel one week after eating a jaguar. What is most important is that the wait, that long famine, has come to a close.

Wedding 1 - Completed

So my first wedding as a best man has gone down about as perfectly as could be expected. It was a great weekend for Bree and Jess and everyone had an amazing time. Congratulations again to the happy couple. Adam and I were the best men, and on Monday and Tuesday night of last week prepared a pretty awesome speech that I will post below for those who might not have heard it or want to read it again. I was very impressed with what we were able to come up with. It had it all - humor, personal stories, well wishes, touchy feely, wit. An overall well rounded speech. I’ve really set the bar for the next best man speech that I will be giving at Mike’s wedding in 10 days.

The speech reads back and forth line by line between Adam and I, with a switch half way through:

I’m Tim and I’m Adam, and we won’t cause a site

The wedding party looks wonderful, especially the one wearing white

Thank you Am and Cybil – for a wedding made to impress

But if we’re the best men, then why is Bree marrying Jess.

Now listen to our tale, about a boy and girl’s love.

These words are our own, not sent from above.

Five years ago, to Ohio Bree flew

Espirit and his grandparents, the only ones he knew.

When Adam’s roommate pairing came, he read it with glee

I quickly dumped my girlfriend, for this new girl named Bree.

At first disappointment, when seeing this Texas man

Soon I would realize, this was all part of a plan.

It was destiny’s plot when Jess moved to their floor

Who would have thought the perfect bride right next door?

The first time I saw them, was Halloween night

Dressed up both as cowboys, the future was in sight.

We quickly became friends, drinks and high fives

Inside jokes – “We’ve paid with many lives.”

Midnight showings of many movies we did enjoy

Star Wars and Lord of the Rings, we pleased the inner boy.

Many Saturday’s we spent, Buckeye pride we did show

At the shoe or the Oval, we cheered OH… - IO

Bree’s big truck Bertha, a reliable blue

In the heart of Ohio, showed Texas plates true

Pong and corn hole are games we enjoy

And Brazenhead pub, threatened our employ

A memorable trip, we said Tempe or Bust

A week in the desert - to see the Irish eat dust.

How could Bree catch Jess, could should be any hotter

But why the day of marriage, same day as Harry Potter.

You’ve both been close friends, you introduced me to Kate.

Nights Jess would come over, in the other room I’d …. play video games.

It was plain to all, right from the start

That Bree and Jess, had won each others heart

Coming from strong, loving families, you both are aware

That each of us here tonight, are happy for you and really care

And we might as well tell you, Bree you’re quite a lucky guy

You and Jess are perfect, and here’s the reason why

You have fun with each other, stubbornness aside.

You love each other deeply, and can swallow your pride.

So you see it’s quite apparent, great fun these two will share

Their’s is a love so special, some might call it rare

Marriage is about experience, and there’s magic along the way

It’s in sharing your life together, with the bond growing each day.

Such a perfect couple, ending up as man and wife

Is proof enough for me, that God does guide our life

Now let’s all lift our glasses to the happiest man we know

And to Jess his lovely wife, the one who man him so.

To Bree and Jess!

And here are some pictures I took, most of them aren’t the greatest due to the lighting of the different rooms we were in, but no matter.

Bree & Jess’s Wedding

Engaged!

For those of you that may not have heard, during the trip to San Francisco I asked Kate to marry me and she said yes! I’ve got lots to share but unfortunately not a lot of time to share it. Bree and Jess’s wedding is this weekend and Mike’s bachelor party then wedding the following 2 weekends, so that has had me very busy. I plan to post a full update soon, when I can write it all down (and likely will include it on a wedding site/blog) but for now pictures will have to do.
