Quite the week

Flickr/Pics, General, Movies, Sports

About 2 weeks ago I had one of the greatest weeks of my life. It started on a Tuesday. 8 of us went out to Hyde Park Steak House with Bree. It was kind of like a parting dinner before Bree left for Texas. The dinner was excellent (and very expensive) and we all suited up and enjoyed a little bit of the high ($$$) life. We were expecting that Superman Returns was going to have a midnight showing that evening, but were shocked to see that it actually started at 10:00 when we strolled over to the theater around 11:20. No worries, we saved that for the next day.

Went and saw Superman Returns the next day and it was as good as I was expecting. The writers did a real good job of relating to how the old movies portrayed Superman and also brining in some of their own new ideas and creations. The acting was by far the best part of the movie. From Jimmy Olsen to Lex Luther, all of the casting was spot on and really well done. A couple of us ended up going back to see it again in IMAX 3D the following Tuesday. More on that later.

Friday I went down to Cincinnati with Nick, Mike and my brother for the Reds Indians game. We arrived just as the first inning was beginning and wouldn’t you know it, the Indians had just hit a homerun. By the time the inning was over the Indians were up 5-0. I felt we were in for a long game, but it was alright because our seats were amazing. A few months back I had picked up the Season tickets that Ashland had for this game. They were 10 rows up from the field, just a bit past first base. The whole game we had to listen to Nick applaud and cheer for his Indians but it was all worth it when Adam Dunn hit a walk off Grand Slam in the bottom of the 9th. That was something I will probably never see again in person during my life. Everyone around us turned and gave Nick all sorts of grief as he sulked in his seat. After the game there was a great fireworks show. Catch all the pictures below.

Saturday Bree and I got up early and headed out to Dayton to meet up with my Dad and Brother to drive over to Indianapolis for the US Grand Prix. It was a pretty hot day but our seats were awesome. We were sitting right at the first turn at the end of a long straight away. The cars would come down the stretch as fast as possible and then slow down in seconds to take off into the curvy infield. You can check out those pics in the photo section.

On the first turn of the first lap there was a huge wreck in which 7 of the 22 racers were taken out. Unfortunately the rest of the race didn’t hold nearly as much competition with fewer racers, but the sound and sight of every car going by made every lap incredible. I can’t wait to go back next year.

Monday evening we had a party for Bree leaving dubbed “Breeapaloza”. Good times. Pictures of that event as well below.

Tuesday I went with Nick and Mik3 to see Head Automatica, Angels and Airwaves and Taking Back Sunday in concert at Promowest (now the LC). It was a great concert. A gentle rain was coming down almost the entire time which, combined with the lights and rock music, made for an “epic” night (according to Tom Delong). I must admit, it was a very cool atmosphere. Taking Back Sunday definitely puts on a good show and ranks somewhere in the top 5 of bands of seen play live.

Wednesday we went back for more Superman action, but this time in 3D and IMAX. Or so we were told. There actually was no IMAX. The theater was about 1/3 of the size of theater we saw it the first time in. No worries though. Sound and picture quality were excellent as always (Go AMC). The “new” 3D technology wasn’t really all that. Only 20 minutes of the film were in 3D. The presentation did a real good job of letting you know when to put your goggles on or take them off, but overall it didn’t really do too much more that blue/red 3D does. I guess it looks a little better, but for ever new scene it took your eyes a minute to adjust and for any scene with a ton of action it just plain didn’t work. Most of the 3D scenes looked like 2D models at different depth planes. It really isn’t as explosive of a breakthrough as sound or color were.

Thursday Bree left for Texas. A sad day indeed but friendship is stronger than distance so I’m not too bummed. Friday we went and saw the squeal to Pirates of the Caribbean (along with millions of other people apparently). It was good, but very very long. For an action adventure movie one could say it was too long. Plus the story wasn’t resolved at all which made it feel even longer. Apparently the director pulled a Lord of the Rings and filmed the second and third movie back to back, so the third movie will come out a year from now July 2007. That makes the cliff-hanger of an ending a little better to bare, and with the news that Pirates stomped Spidey’s weekend record, I doubt they have second thoughts about putting Pirates 3 out.

Anyway, that’s been my life for the past week and a half. Very busy and full of activity. Hopefully the next few will be a little more relaxing. My new audio setup should be running full blast within the next few days so I’m looking forward to spending some evenings lazying it out to HD and 5.1

Games, Gadgets and Graduation Weekend

Flickr/Pics, Games, General

So I’ve been saying that I was going to talk about what I’ve been gaming and now I’m going to. Let’s see, I’ll start on the PC side of things. Almost 2 months back Oblivion came out and I posted about my decision process to buy it for PC or Xbox. Sadly I haven’t played much of it since. I know it’s a great game, and I enjoy the time I spend with it, but there is something about RPGs and myself that I always have to get over. I’m not sure what it is but almost every RPG I’ve encountered, I’ll start the game, play part of the way through the first section and then kind of drop off. I usually end up revisiting the game months, sometimes years later and playing the crap out of it till it is completed. I feel this is how I’ve approached Oblivion. Maybe sometime this summer I’ll conquer the land of Tamriel. Last week, Half Life 2: Episode One came out. This is a new type of gaming experience in that it only cost $20 (as opposed to $50 or $60) and the length of the game is much shorter. Valve plans on releasing episodes every 8 months or so. The topic of episodic gaming has been getting a lot of talk recently. I’m really enjoying this new type of presentation format. I’ve become a huge fan of being able to sit down and play a game for a weekend or a few hours during a week and be finished with a game. I really hope this is something we’ll see more of in the future. Don’t get me wrong, I still love the Epic 60+ hour games. But this just brings a new type of style to gaming that I really dig.

Towards the end of May I finally gave in and purchased a PS2. This was my first Sony Gaming product and I had planned on holding out until the PS3, but with the recent announcement of its price point of $600, I decided now as the time to pick up a cheap used PS2. Did I mention it’s modded? Yea, so that kinda gives me…. ummm… extra options. I hear the PS2 has a lot of games :) I’ll go into depth on that another time.

Finally, on Sunday I made my way over to BestBuy and purchased a super hot DS Lite + Brain Age. When the DS first came out I didn’t like it at all. It looked to bulky and just didn’t draw me in. Now with the redesign and added brightness and battery life, I caved. So far I’ve only played Brain Age, which is a very entertaining little title. Who thought I’d ever have fun doing simple math. Kate has been playing Brain Age as well (mostly Soduku) and has managed to get a lower Brain Age than me. Grrrr. Matt was an early adopter and has a DS Huge with Mario Kart and New Super Mario Bros. so I’m going to try to steal those while he’s away on vacation. At a $130 purchase price, it’s really not that expensive for such a great package. Hopefully a few of the other guys will pick one up this week and we can get some mad multiplayer going on.

This past weekend was Graduation Weekend for OSU. It’s hard to believe it has only been a year since I’ve been out of school. Seems a lot longer for some reason. Saturday night we went out to Rose and Thistle (local pub) for some good times. You can check out the pictures…

Sunday, while everyone else was at Graduation, Kate and I went to COSI. It was only the second time I had been and they have totally redone the place since I last went. Unfortunately most of the changes aren’t for the better. The layout is very sparse and there aren’t nearly as many hands on experiments as I remember. The building COSI is in is way too big for as few exhibits as they have. The areas and exhibits they do have are very cool looking and professionally done, it just needs more. Now through August I believe, there is a Star Wars exhibit that has a bunch of props from all the movies and also displays how we might use some of the technology from Star Wars for future life. Overall the day was a plus. Check out the pictures in the photo section.

After looking at all those pictures and choosing the ones I did for the links, I realized I need to do more editing than just removing red-eye. Time for some cropping and brightness/contrast adjusting.

Till next time…

I’ll take the #5, with mayo.

Flickr/Pics, General, Site Maintenance

Happy Cinco de Mayo, that special time of year where everyone asks their mexican friends “What the hell is Cinco de Mayo?” and the answer always is “Why the hell are you asking me? I’m Puerto Rican!” Anyway, it’s just as good an excuse as any to celebrate…. something…
I’m sure many quality pictures will be produced this evening.

Speaking of pictures, I discovered quite possibly the most awesomest plugin ever for my blog that integrates Flickr in the most fantastic way. I wish I would have known this sooner. I would have used Flickr from the start. Click on photos up at the top for the coolness to begin.

btw – cinco de mayo is the day that is celebrated to commemorate the Mexican victory over the French during the Battle of Puebla in 1862. Who would have thought defeating the French would garner this amount of celebration?

Personalized Web. Delivered.

Flickr/Pics, General, Site Maintenance

I’m a huge fan of aggregate news. Over the past year I have used many services to have all the most recent news delievered to me in an easy to browse form. There have been a ton of different webpages that have hit the scene within the past few months to help users bring all the info the web has to offer in one easy to read page.

I first got hooked on the webnews addiction with news.google. I later became exposed to the world of rss feeds. RSS, to put it simply, lists the headlines and sometimes a clipping of an article from a website. It takes out all the form and layout of a webpage and just delivers the content. For someone who just wants to know what is new, thats all I need. I started using RSS but couldn’t fine a suitable program to deliver all of my needs. Yahoo and Microsoft started their push into the personal webportal which allowed you to create a page that contained RSS feeds. Google soon created a similar feature at google.com/ig. I decided to use google’s service and have had it as my homepage ever since. The probelm is that most of these personal webportals would display the entire feed and only limit you to the most recent 5 or 10 articles. So you couldn’t go back and look at what you had already missed. It was either the most current, or nothing at all. Then I discovered bloglines.

Bloglines is what I’ve been using for the past 6 months. It will allow you to sumbit as many rss feeds as you want then organize them into folders for viewing whenever you want. The best part I like about it is that it remebers what you have already viewed on the web. So if I look at a feed from work it will mark it as read and then when I go home only show me the feeds that I haven’t read yet. It is a great time waster and allows me to (view) browse 10x more data in 1/10th of the time.

A little while back del.icio.us and digg came onto the scene. These two sites would allow users to submit articles from all over the internet and if an article was popular it became more visable. I would visit these sites as well as my blogroll on bloglines and a few other popularity web feeders. It has come to the point where I need to condense all my daily visits again. My goal is to be able to go to one site and get all my news as well as “whats popular” on the web. There are now even more services than ever that are trying to deliver your daily news. Today alone I’ve come across Spotback, newsvine, newsgator, findory and that doesn’t even count other services like flurl, fark, slashdot, live.com or drudgereport. The main thing that inspired me to write this post was a site that just went live 2 weeks ago popurls. It combines al the top urls from all these top url gathering sites and even includes media sites like flickr or youtube. Every site has its pros and cons. With many sites using AJAX and Web2.0 features, the battle for your personalized news delivery and webportal is a fiece and growing one.
Gasp… I’m exauhsted just thinking about all the info.

You may have noticed the post below this a test posting from flickr. Well for those of you that are wondering, I have decided to let flickr do all of my picture storage. I really wanted to use my enormouse amount of space that I own here on timjanderson.com, but flickr just makes the most sense. Plus it’s the cool thing to do. So currently I am uploading everything (2 gig a month limit may slow that process down) and giving it some organization. Soon you’ll be able to see all the pictures in all their flickr fancy format.

In Progress – Viewable Here
