Snakes on a Plane: A review

Movies

Last night Mike, Newbs, Matt, Jill and I went and saw the 10:00 showing of Snakes on a Plane. I had been anticipating this movie ever since I read the first story on it on the net back in February. I even bought the poster since it was so badass. Really, I didn’t expect it to live up to they hype at all. I was expecting some funny moments, but for the most part for it to be a terrible terrible film.

I may have been right, but my experience last night was awesome. This is one hell of a fun movie. There are a few things that you should know about this movie though before you venture off to go see it. You should not go see this movie if any of the following apply:

- You don’t know why the movie is called “Snakes on a Plane”
- You don’t appreciate his royal badass, Sam Jackson
- You plan to see this by yourself on a Tuesday matinee with a 20% full theater
- You can only be entertained by films of quality that have a chance at an Oscar nomination
- You don’t know the one line in the movie to look forward to

Those are just a few things that if apply to you, I’d recommend not going to see this movie. Since within our group the majority of which were looking forward to an entertainingly bad movie AND everyone else at the theater was completely into the back-story and aura surrounding the release of this movie the environment at the theater was twice as good as any other movie that I’ve seen. If there hadn’t had been the constant chants, cheers, gasps, hisses and applause from the rest of the audience, the experience would not have been nearly as enjoyable. I think seeing Snakes on the opening night had more of an impact on the level of enjoyment I felt than say seeing a new Star Wars or Harry Potter movie would.

You have to know what to expect going in. This movie is TRYING to be that late night B level Sci-Fi, campy movie. It does a lot of things that in any other movie would get eye rolls but for Snakes, becomes an intentional laugh out loud funny moment. It succeeds in being a really really bad enjoyable movie without being too stupid. I didn’t pay $7.50 expecting to see a bunch of special effects, action sequences or a cinematic masterpieces. I wanted to get some pure entertainment and that’s what Snakes on a Plane delivered. This movie pulled off all the hype and was much better than I could have expected.

EDIT: Aintitcoolnews has a review up that pretty much mirrors my exact feelings of the movie. His experience was near identical to ours including the drunks who thought every line was hy-lar-eous and the audience shouting along to the famous movie line.

Movie News (and other)

Mostly links to trailers, but new word on the street about the Joker.

  • From the Broken Lizzard Guys (Supertroopers) their new movie – Beerfest – looks pretty funny. And it has to be better than Club Dread. Anything is better than that.
  • Could be just a rumor, but I hear it was announced at Comic-Con International (San Diego) that Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker for the next Batman movie. Not sure what to think of it. I guess we’ll see when the movie comes out. I think there are some better choices out their like the link states. Hugo Weaving would have been awesome, or maybe Jude Law or Paul Bettany.
  • Borat – I know most of you probably don’t watch the Ali G show, but the little bit I’ve seen gets me laughing. I’ll probably check out the rest of the seasons before this comes out.
  • Plays II (The Reverse) and III (The Play Action) have been posted over at The Blue-Gray Sky blog. Damn we rocked. I cannot wait for football season to get here. NCAA Football 2007 came out on Tuesday and I’ve been playing it every night. Hopefully it’ll hold me over for the next month or so.

I spent some time pasting together a few shots that I took at the Reds Indians game as well as at the F1 Race. Click on the pics below to see some sweet panoramic shots. I’m going to have to do more of these in the future. (For Flickr noobs, click on “All Sizes” above the picture to get a bigger version)

Also I updated the Breeapaloza set with group pictures that were taken on Julie’s camera. They turned out pretty nice.

That’s it. This post brought to you by a series of tubes.

Wednesday Links.

General, Movies, TV

I have a few links that I wanted to share and instead of making a bunch of “asides” I decided to put them all together in one post:

  • What if I told you a movie was coming out about a mysterious story of two magicians (Hugh Jackman and Christian bale) whose intense rivalry leads them on a life-long battle for supremacy full of obsession, deceit and jealousy with dangerous and deadly consequences? Would you be interested? What if I told you it was co-written and directed by Christopher Nolan? What if it also had Michael Caine, Scarlett Johansson, David Bowie and Andy Serkis? I’m excited. And it’s coming out this year! Batman vs Wolverine with Magic?!?! Woo Hoo. First photo here.
  • For all you Entourage fans, HBO took out a pretty cool Ad in Variety for the fake movie Aquaman
  • The Blue-Gray Sky (A Notre Dame Blog) is doing an analysis of why they got whooped during the Fiesta Bowl. The link is to a really good break down of the 1st quarter touchdown pass from Troy Smith to Teddy Ginn. I believe they are going to break down the other scoring plays we had so keep an eye out.

Quite the week

Flickr/Pics, General, Movies, Sports

About 2 weeks ago I had one of the greatest weeks of my life. It started on a Tuesday. 8 of us went out to Hyde Park Steak House with Bree. It was kind of like a parting dinner before Bree left for Texas. The dinner was excellent (and very expensive) and we all suited up and enjoyed a little bit of the high ($$$) life. We were expecting that Superman Returns was going to have a midnight showing that evening, but were shocked to see that it actually started at 10:00 when we strolled over to the theater around 11:20. No worries, we saved that for the next day.

Went and saw Superman Returns the next day and it was as good as I was expecting. The writers did a real good job of relating to how the old movies portrayed Superman and also brining in some of their own new ideas and creations. The acting was by far the best part of the movie. From Jimmy Olsen to Lex Luther, all of the casting was spot on and really well done. A couple of us ended up going back to see it again in IMAX 3D the following Tuesday. More on that later.

Friday I went down to Cincinnati with Nick, Mike and my brother for the Reds Indians game. We arrived just as the first inning was beginning and wouldn’t you know it, the Indians had just hit a homerun. By the time the inning was over the Indians were up 5-0. I felt we were in for a long game, but it was alright because our seats were amazing. A few months back I had picked up the Season tickets that Ashland had for this game. They were 10 rows up from the field, just a bit past first base. The whole game we had to listen to Nick applaud and cheer for his Indians but it was all worth it when Adam Dunn hit a walk off Grand Slam in the bottom of the 9th. That was something I will probably never see again in person during my life. Everyone around us turned and gave Nick all sorts of grief as he sulked in his seat. After the game there was a great fireworks show. Catch all the pictures below.

Saturday Bree and I got up early and headed out to Dayton to meet up with my Dad and Brother to drive over to Indianapolis for the US Grand Prix. It was a pretty hot day but our seats were awesome. We were sitting right at the first turn at the end of a long straight away. The cars would come down the stretch as fast as possible and then slow down in seconds to take off into the curvy infield. You can check out those pics in the photo section.

On the first turn of the first lap there was a huge wreck in which 7 of the 22 racers were taken out. Unfortunately the rest of the race didn’t hold nearly as much competition with fewer racers, but the sound and sight of every car going by made every lap incredible. I can’t wait to go back next year.

Monday evening we had a party for Bree leaving dubbed “Breeapaloza”. Good times. Pictures of that event as well below.

Tuesday I went with Nick and Mik3 to see Head Automatica, Angels and Airwaves and Taking Back Sunday in concert at Promowest (now the LC). It was a great concert. A gentle rain was coming down almost the entire time which, combined with the lights and rock music, made for an “epic” night (according to Tom Delong). I must admit, it was a very cool atmosphere. Taking Back Sunday definitely puts on a good show and ranks somewhere in the top 5 of bands of seen play live.

Wednesday we went back for more Superman action, but this time in 3D and IMAX. Or so we were told. There actually was no IMAX. The theater was about 1/3 of the size of theater we saw it the first time in. No worries though. Sound and picture quality were excellent as always (Go AMC). The “new” 3D technology wasn’t really all that. Only 20 minutes of the film were in 3D. The presentation did a real good job of letting you know when to put your goggles on or take them off, but overall it didn’t really do too much more that blue/red 3D does. I guess it looks a little better, but for ever new scene it took your eyes a minute to adjust and for any scene with a ton of action it just plain didn’t work. Most of the 3D scenes looked like 2D models at different depth planes. It really isn’t as explosive of a breakthrough as sound or color were.

Thursday Bree left for Texas. A sad day indeed but friendship is stronger than distance so I’m not too bummed. Friday we went and saw the squeal to Pirates of the Caribbean (along with millions of other people apparently). It was good, but very very long. For an action adventure movie one could say it was too long. Plus the story wasn’t resolved at all which made it feel even longer. Apparently the director pulled a Lord of the Rings and filmed the second and third movie back to back, so the third movie will come out a year from now July 2007. That makes the cliff-hanger of an ending a little better to bare, and with the news that Pirates stomped Spidey’s weekend record, I doubt they have second thoughts about putting Pirates 3 out.

Anyway, that’s been my life for the past week and a half. Very busy and full of activity. Hopefully the next few will be a little more relaxing. My new audio setup should be running full blast within the next few days so I’m looking forward to spending some evenings lazying it out to HD and 5.1

The terrorists have won

The USA has not advanced past the first round of the world cup. That can only mean one thing. The terrorists have won. Tis a sad day for US Soccer. But that still doesn’t change the fact that I’m desperately trying to get a Don’t Tread on Me USA Soccer Jersey or Hoodie. Sexy. I think I will now be cheering for either England or Sweden. GO SVENSKA!!!

Went home over the weekend to see Dad for Father’s day. I brought DS Lite with me mainly to show it to my brother Ryan, but also to show my mom and dad Brain Age. Boy was that a mistake. For most of the day all my mom did was play Brain Age. She loves it. Which is cool because Brain Age is helping everyone understand that games aren’t bad for you. They CAN be educational and productive.

Since Bree will be leaving in the next few weeks and taking along with him the Stereo system we’ve been using up untill now, I’ve been searching out to purchase a new one. I have been doing lots of research and chatting with various peoples and think I’ve got my system narrowed down to just a few final choices. Hopefully within the next two weeks I’ll have made a purchase and be able to post some pics and tell you how glorious my ears feel once they awaken to sound never thought possible. At least I sure hope they feel glorious after plopping down nearly 2 weeks worth of pay! Ouch. But I’ve been a frugal buyer and have been saving for this so it’s ok. Next up, pop-corn machine to go next to my newly purchased Snakes on a Plane & Superman Returns poster.

Btw, the last time I was this excited/hyped for a movie was for LOTR: Return of the King. I’ve now got the soundtrack and the movie is only a week away. Wooo freaking hooo. (edit: I realized this could be confusing. I was talking about my hype level for Superman Returns, although SoaP is right up there :P )

Post-post: While looking around the net for an image of the Snakes on a Plane poster I found these funny knock offs. First we have the Playstation spin-off of:

Snake’s on a Plane
Snake's on a plane

and then the even funnier:

Snape’s on a Plane
Snape

Too Funny.

“Enough is enough! I’ve had it with these m-fing snakes on this m-fing plane!”
